The Scenario, Hold the Line

The Battle of Caddo Lake was a pivotal moment in the fight to save Texas. With its attempt to liberate Shreveport rebuffed, The Texas Tank Corps, now renamed the 1st Texas Army Corps, retreated outside the vast fields of the Red Weed, and then entrenched.  It’s north flank secured by Caddo Lake, the 36th “Lone Star” Division dug in using lessons hard won in the days when the survival of Texas was in doubt.

Preamble:
Lieutenant Colonel Raymond F. Metcalfe inspected his positions.  They were not quite standard, but the Martian seem to understand "Standard", and so his deployment was full of surprises.

Major Darling complained about digging his tanks in, his argument was they were meant to be mobile.  But, he understood that all that dirt offered some protection from the heat ray, and the need for mobility was unnecessary, if your opponent was walking right up to you.

Like hunting ducks from a blind.

पे जाने के लियेवेबसाइट gave his orders.  His progenitor kept on about formations and order.  But that was the old way.  When the humans were more prone to run.  But these days new thoughts were required.  We needed space, because the human weapons, while ineffective, were plentiful, and while the armor of a war machine was excellent, it was not perfect.  He wasn't going to have the cascade effects take out multiple war machines in his assault!

Deployment:

This is the 142/II Battalion, none of which can be seen.

This is the 142/I Battalion, which also cannot be seen.

To the north, the tripods code named Hewey, Marvin, and Louie.  Supported by a Grenidier, Slaver, Scout and drones.

To the south, a nearly identical composition.
Turn 1:
Scenario rules, for turn 1, the Martians move first.
The Assault tripods all move forward, to just within long range from the trenches.

In the south, the same tactics are deployed.

Field guns are revealed and are aiming for the slavers.
1st Battalion's Heavy Machinegun Company is revealed and shot up Marvin.
Turn 2.
The Martian wins the initiative, and elects to let the humans mover first.

Machineguns continue to shoot at Marvin.
And field guns put another hit on the slaver.
Black dust falls like rain on the trenches, revealing a unit of tanks.
Heat rays target the field guns, but the humans have dug deep.
Black dust is called upon the Machine Gun Company, but falls short.
Turn 3:
The Martian continues to hold the initiative, but this time elects to move and shoot first.

Marvin and Huey assault the trenches along with a unit of drones.
The view from the trenches.
Louie ascends to the top of the rise, revealing more tanks.
Dewey cleans out a trench with his black dust and continues forward.
The Martian have taken the high ground, but there is a price to pay for that.
Turn 4:
The Americans win the initiative and elect to go first.

Rock and Roll!  Every American gun is firing this turn.
A Slaver Tripod is destroyed.
Taking with it a unit of drones.
Dewey is assaulted and brought down by grenades.  The heroes of the 2nd Battalion's heavy company pose for pictures amongst the wreckage.  Another tripod is detonated, evaporating two companies of infantry, and the Mk IV tank.

Marvin and Huey polish off a platoon of Mk III's
The Americans have lost 6 units towards their demoralization level of 9.
The Martians have lost 4 unit towards their demoralization level of 8.

Turn 5:
The Martians win the initiative and elect to move first.

To the north, the Martians continue their assault on the entrenched infantry, with little result.  On the high ground, a pair of drones assault the last Mk II steam tank and tear it to bits.
In the south, one tripod ignores the infantry, and heads straight for the field guns.  The raised dirt and deep holes manage to protect them however.  Not so lucky is the Regiment Command stand.  "Louie" ascends the hill again, sights and sweeps the command unit into oblivion.
The Americans have lost 8 units towards their demoralization level of 9.
The Martians have lost 5 unit towards their demoralization level of 8.

Turn 6:
This is the final turn, if the Martians fail to demoralize the Americans, then the Americans win the game.
The Martians win the initiative and elect to go first.

"Huey" and "Marvin" successfully burn and rout the 142/I/3rd company.
While the drones successfully assault and rout the 142/I/2nd company.
The Tripods in the south continue to pummel the entrenchments but with no effect.  But they have done enough as the 142nd is now demoralized.
The Americans have lost 10 units towards their demoralization level of 9.
The Martians have lost 5 unit towards their demoralization level of 8.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General McCook looked stared mournfully at his map.  Brigadiers Hutchings and Hulen stood attentive and waiting for the decisions.  The 141st was pinned but still in good order.  The 142nd was in rout, but was retreating to the battle groups formed from the 72nd Brigade.  The Martian actions didn't seem correct, given the victories they achieved.  In the far north, where victory was near total, they hung back and started probing.  In the south, where they took a drubbing, they continued to charge forward, and have lost two more tripods as a result to the waiting guns of the 3rd Tank Brigade.

"Signal the 141st, dig in and hold, send runners by boat to confirm the order."
"Hulan, have the 144th replace the 143rd in their lines, send the 143rd to reinforce and rally the 142nd."

"What about the air reconnaissance that there are more tripods coming sir?"

"Yes, there are more coming, but we also have more coming.  I just got this telegram from General Funston.  If we can confound the Martian for 2 days, the army of St. Louis will arrive, and they are bring one of those land ironclads, the "New Orleans."

The situation as it is.
